Padded shorts make a huge difference to your comfort in the saddle and are designed to prevent rubbing and provide softness and shock absorption.
These come in two different styles:
Bib shorts which come over your shoulders to hold the shorts up;
Normal shorts which finish around your waist.
Normal shorts are often donned by newer riders, as they are less serious than bib shorts and often cheaper. Whereas, bib shorts are worn by the faster more competitive riders for their comfortability.
The choice between normal shorts and bib shorts is usually down to preference, but which do you wear?
